Fibrocystic Breasts and Breast Augmentation

Fibrocystic breasts are not uncommon these days. Many women find that they have a little lumpy texture to their breast tissue As long as these little lumps are carefully monitored through self-check exams and routine check-ups with a physician then most patients diagnosed with fibrocystic breasts can still elect to have a breast augmentation surgery performed.

Most plastic surgeons will prefer it if the patient has a mammogram or an MRI done before they agree to do the breast implant surgery. This will rule out any type of complications that may arise from recent changes to any of the fibrotic cysts that are currently present in the patient’s breasts. The surgeon may also wish to talk with the physician that has been monitoring the fibrocystic breasts so that they can make a plan together on what the best procedure for the breast augmentation surgery should be. Family history of breast disease and breast cancer can also be a concern for the plastic surgeon.

Many plastic surgeons will recommend that the breast implants be placed under the chest muscle so that future MRIs and mammograms can be performed without having an obstruction in the way. The patient will also get different options as to the type of implant used as not all of them qualify for this type of placement. The plastic surgeon will also then discuss with them the type of incision that will need to be made for the breast implant surgery.

Patients that have fibrocystic breasts should consult with their physicians about their hopes of having a breast augmentation surgery done. Their physicians will be able to tell them all of the options that they have available to them and some may help point them in the right direction into finding a qualified board certified plastic surgeon to help with the surgery.
